The Best Eco Friendly Dog Beds:
Keep Your Pup Comfy and Your Planet Happy

by | Sep 25, 2020

Aw, dogs. Love ‘em or love ‘em, they will always bring joy to our lives. We all just want the best for them, don’t we?

To help them live their best life, dogs need sleep. We all know humans should sleep 8 hours a day, but did you know dogs need to sleep 12-14 hours a day, with some larger dogs sleeping up to 18?! Oh, to be a dog.

When any conscious consumer sets out on a purchase, we have the health of planet, people, and pocket in mind. While it might seem small in the grand scheme of things, choosing the right dog bed can have a huge impact on the planet. Eco-friendly dog beds are made with not only sustainable materials, but are also made to last, meaning you won’t keep having to buy a new bed and disposing of your old ones every time your pup innocently ruins another bed with a playful bite or a little-too-exaggerated stretch.

Less waste, eco-friendly materials, non-toxic ingredients, and organic fabrics—all of it is on our list. With help from my own pup, Oreo, below is a list of our top picks for the best eco-friendly dog beds.

Quick Navigation

1. P.L.A.Y. Beds

play-snuggle-dog-bedTrue story: I have the coldest nose in the world. It’s freezingly cold, all the time! Mom makes fun of me because I like to burrow my nose in blankets and under pillows, but I can’t help it. But this bed? Ahhh, it’s a warm furry cave perfect for the nose protection I’ve been looking for. And if it gets turned inside out, it is the softest bed I have ever slept on. I’m lying on it now while Moms is asking me how I like it and Izzzz.

P.L.A.Y. (Pet Lifestyle and You) is a certified B Corp and a Gold Certified Green Business that designs dog beds, dog toys, and other accessories with the planet (and people and pets, of course) in mind.

They offer many different types of eco-friendly dog beds in all shapes and sizes (including a teepee, omg!) for dogs of all shapes and sizes. Our top choices are the Chill Pad, Snuggle Bed, and Urban Denim Lounge Bed.

What’s it Made Out Of?

The Lounge Bed is made with denim with a leather logo and has a lead-free zipper. The Chill Pad is made with all-natural cotton, polyester, and faux suede. The Snuggle Bed is made with canvas and faux fur. All the beds are filled with Planet Fill™ fiber which is made from 100% post-consumer certified-safe recycled plastic bottles!

Is it Durable?

So far so good for the Snuggle Bed! The Lounge Bed is made with a tough, yet soft, denim and some reviewers have had it for years with no issue. The Chill Pad has been reported as durable, although some dogs might chew the leather logo on the top. Luckily, you can replace the filler or the dog bed cover if need be!

Can it Be Washed?

All three beds are machine washable and dryer friendly! Makes for easy clean up!

Special Features

The Snuggle Bed is convertible and can change into 4 different styles depending on whether your pup wants to burrow, sit in it, or lay on top of it. The Chill Pad is designed to fit most standard pet crates and versatile enough to have all around the house.

As we mentioned, P.L.A.Y. uses recycled plastic bottles for their Planet Fill™ fiber that’s used in their beds. To date, they have saved over 10 million plastic bottles from going into landfills and polluting the oceans!

And as a company, they use 100% renewable energy in their headquarters office and are certified for being environmentally responsible in the way they source and manufacture products. Their packaging is kept to a minimum and their tags are made from Forest Stewardship Council certified safe paper. In addition to being planet friendly, P.L.A.Y. is committed to giving back to animals in need—check out their Warm Bellies Initiative!

3. Re-Mat Eco-Friendly Dog Bed

remat-eco-dog-bed-1Do you ever come home from a long day of rolling in the mud in the park and just want a nice, comfy lounge spot? You’ve come to the right place. Yes, it’s made of human tempurpedic mattresses, but this one is all yours. That means no one can “accidentally” kick you during the night (Moms!), or push you off because it’s not your bed (cats!). Plus, you can roll around to your heart’s content without any bumpers making it a slight-too-far fall to the ground!

Re-Mat is a nonprofit based in San Antonio that’s focused on recycling old (human) mattresses. The U.S. disposes about 50,000 mattresses every day, yet the steel springs, foam padding, wooden frames, and cotton can all be reused. The Founder, Christopher Moken, decided to do something about this mattress disposal problem, and in 2017, started Re-Mat.

What’s it Made Out Of

Denim and velcro and filled with 100% Recycled Memory Foam Mattress.

Is It Durable?

Re-Mat only started making the recycled memory foam pet beds this year so we were only recently able to get our paws on one, but with the outer denim fabric and memory foam, we’re thinking this one is built to last. So far, Milou (pictured above) has had like-new sweet dreams on this nap spot.

Can it be washed?

The outer cover is removable for easy, breezy cleaning!

Special Features

The bed arrives vacuum sealed to reduce shipping costs and lower the carbon footprint. Plus, the vacuum sealed bag is reusable. It is currently holding all of our Co-Founder’s winter clothes. All of Re-Mat’s beds are handmade in the USA.

Extra special is that our Founder & Co-Founder’s dog is featured on the site! It’s her big break!

We thought Re-Mat had thought of it all with keeping mattresses out of landfills, where they take up much more space than regular trash and focusing on low-carbon, low impact packaging. But, nope, Re-Mat’s big plans only get bigger and better. As they expand their production, they have plans to focus on community empowerment, committed to employing people experiencing homelessness and individuals just getting out of prison.

Pretty fun movement to be a part of, we must say!

Price: $55

7. Toad&Co Eco Dog Bed

toad-co-eco-dog-bedThis is the kind of bed really sporty dogs would like. The kind of dog I hope to be, but I’m just not sure I am. It’s perfect for throwing in the back of your truck to go camping and laying out under the stars, but also super comfy when you’re at home watching TV with Moms or Pops! It’s the bed for the on-the-move pup we all dream to be.

Originally named Horny Toad, Toad&Co is a Colorado-founded, California-based sustainable clothing company. Since their beginning, Toad&Co has been committed to creating global change by using eco-friendly and sustainable materials, including in their dog bed.

What’s it Made Out Of?

Toad&Co beds are made from organic cotton blends and denim and are filled with upcycled fabrics.

Is it Durable?

The outer layer is made with “durable” cotton blends and is doubled layered for long term use.

Can it be Washed?

Yes, the cover is removable and machine washable on cold and can be tumble dried on low.

Special Features

The zipper is hidden to hide from chewers and there is a pocket in the corner for your pup’s favorite toy.

Toad&Co is also committed to sustainability in the rest of their products, which are eco-friendly, including clothing that is made from at least 80% sustainable fibers. They also have an option for reusable packaging, which is returned to the company to be used again. They also partner with many different environmental organizations including The Conservation Alliance and The Environmental Defense Center and are part of 1% for the Planet, just like us!

They are also a relatively first-on-the-scene socially responsible company. They partnered with Search, Inc. to found Planet Access Company in 1997. PAC is a logistics warehouse that provides career opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities.

Price: The small option starts at $45.

8. Molly Mutt Dog Bed

Molly-Matt-dog-bedsYou know that feeling when your Moms leaves her clothes on the bed and you snuggle on them because it smells like her? That’s just the best isn’t it! And yeah, sometimes she looks at me like I did something wrong, but why else did she leave her clothes on the bed? Now imagine you could feel like that all the time (minus the look from Moms) and you could smell your Moms (or your Pops!) all day while she leaves you alone to do something called “work.” That’s exactly the feeling you get with this bed.

Molly Mutt is another great option to put on our list on what to do with old clothes. Molly Mutt dog bed is actually a duvet cover and a “stuff sack” that you fill with your old clothes, pillows, blankets, and other fabrics. Since it’s filled with old clothes, it’s filled with a pup’s favorite scent: their human!

What’s it Made Out Of?

Your old clothes! And 100% cotton canvas.

Is it Durable?

Yes, without traditional filling, the replacement rate is considerably lowered. And many reviews mention the durability of the cover against dogs that like to knead their bed before laying down.

Can it be Washed?

Yes, the removable cover is preshrunk and is machine washable.

Special Features

You can order a Pillow Pack Kit for the extra pampered pup that is always trying to steal your pillow.

Because the filling is made from your old clothes and fabrics, it keeps those textiles out of landfills. It also means everything can be washed together, filling and all, for a nice thoroughly cleaned bed. Also since it’s a duvet cover, its carbon footprint is much smaller. Molly Mutt boasts that their duvet covers’ “transportation-related carbon emissions from shipping are reduced by 70% compared to other dog beds”.

Price: Depending on the size, the bed can range from $29-$76.50.

Keep Your Pup Comfy and Earth Happy

Luckily, there are a lot of great options nowadays for eco-friendly dog beds for eco-conscious dog owners. A few others we found that didn’t make the list include The Foggy Dog, Only Natural Pet, and OMI. UK brand Project Blu has some options for the ol’ chaps (chups?) across the pond.

There are even some options on Etsy for a more handcrafted feeling. And if you have any additional suggestions for products that we left off the list, shoot us a message and let us know so we can spread the word!
