Work With Grow Ensemble Show Post Writer

Show Post Writer

Hey there,

I’m Cory Ames, the Founder of Grow Ensemble.

Grow Ensemble is a social impact media and education company on a mission to invite more people into the world of sustainability. We produce podcasts, blogs, and videos to help make everyday change easier.

We want to make sustainability and social impact more accessible and we do that through our content.

At its core, Grow Ensemble is committed to being a force for doing good in the world, and we’re always looking for other contributors who share the same passion!

Our team is 100% remote and most likely always will be! In our writing and editorial team, we’re always looking for strong writers with diverse perspectives and experience to add to the uniqueness and quality of the content we produce.

Grow Ensemble Founder, Cory Ames, introducing the Show Post Writer Role

Position Description: Show Post Writer

With this position, we are looking for writers (& editors) who can produce the very valuable, in-depth “Show Posts” that complement our audio/video podcast episodes.

These posts both act as an introduction to the topics we cover with guests of The Social Entrepreneurship & Innovation Podcast, as well as a deeper dive that provides unique, additional information not otherwise covered on the actual episode.

Here are some recent examples of our “Show Posts”:

  • How to Avoid Fast Fashion
  • Corporate Board Diversity: How to Make Boardrooms of America Look Like America
  • 100% Slavery-Free Chocolate: Is it Possible?

Position Summary:

  • We’re looking for a writer who is passionate about sustainability, social impact, and leaving the world a better place.
  • You will take our podcast recordings and turn them into educational/instructional articles that will teach readers how to accomplish something or think about something in a new way.
  • You should have an ability to listen to a conversation and be able to pick up on details, quotes, and information that is interesting, educational, and noteworthy.
  • You should be equipped to independently conduct research that would add to your article and supplement the primary research already done (the podcast episode).
  • This role is part-time on contract. We produce 4-5 of these show posts per month and hope to have writers who are at least available for 1-2 of those posts per month (sometimes more when required).
  • This role is also remote, so you can work anywhere in the world! But, you should be able to communicate consistently during Grow Ensemble’s business hours (mainly Eastern Standard Time). We communicate primarily via email, Slack, and Zoom.

Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Review podcast episode audio and clean transcript in Descript, taking note of unique and interesting quotes, both for your future articles, as well as others on our team who repurpose podcast episodes into other content (ex: YouTube videos).
  • Receive keywords (researched for SEO) & notes from Cory on important details/information to integrate into the future show post.
  • Conduct supplemental research to fill gaps in information not covered in the podcast conversation.
  • Outline & draft show post that will be published on the Grow Ensemble blog (under your name! We want writers who are passionate about this work & information!).
  • Work with various software tools, like Surfer, to make sure SEO bases are checked (this is how we get eyeballs on what we make!).
  • Respond intelligently to editing and feedback. We always try to provide constructive criticism and expect to work with you to make the post as strong as it can be.
  • You must be responsive (we don’t assign pieces or deadlines without checking with you and usually have at least two weeks built in for back-and-forth on each piece).

Knowledge & Skills:

  • “Clarity of thought” – i.e., understand the key points of a post and how to convey them without fluff, generalizations, etc.
  • Be empathetic and know what matters to the audience for each piece. Even if that sometimes can change!
  • Respond intelligently to editing and feedback. We always try to provide constructive criticism and expect to work with you to make the post as strong as it can be.
  • Be able to edit & review your own work! While editing is a key component of our internal process, we need writers who deliver final drafts with limited typos, grammatical errors, etc.
  • Know how to conduct research and be able to support any/all conclusions you make in your writing with the proper information.
  • Be willing and eager to learn. We can’t possibly expect you to be an expert on all the guests/topics we cover (we cover a lot!), but we do expect you to be willing to learn all that is necessary to write intelligently and clearly.
  • Have an eagerness to continually improve and get better at writing and communicating.
  • Extensive experience isn’t necessarily required – some of our best writers haven’t had previous experience – but having some examples to work with is helpful for us to determine what kind of writer you’ll be for us.

Tools to Be Comfortable With or Learn Quickly:

  • Slack
  • Dropbox
  • Descript
  • Google Drive (Google Docs)
  • ClickUp
  • Zoom
  • Surfer

Final Details:

  • We believe that an equitable and inclusive work environment and a diverse, editorial/writing team are critical for us to make the impact that we hope to with our content.
  • All work is Contract (fixed-price per article). Word count will vary.
  • Our typical show post length is 1,200 – 3,000 words. We don’t necessarily have target word counts for our posts, but we use various SEO guideposts. What’s most important to us is that the post is as long as it needs to be, but no longer.
  • Writers start with an initial paid trial at $150, paid in two phases. After a successful trial, they’ll earn $200 per article, but can continue to earn more per article as they require less editing and instruction throughout the process.
  • Writers who are reliable and talented will also be invited to other assignments outside of our show post process (additional blog content, sponsored client content, etc.).
  • We’re looking for long-term, steady relationships with writers.
  • For the most dependable & best-fit writers, other opportunities will be available— copyediting, content strategy, etc.

Our Grow Ensemble Hiring Process:

  1. If you’re interested in this position, please complete an application below.
  2. If we believe you’ll be a good fit for the position, we’ll invite you to a paid trial project.
  3. The paid trial project will consist of two portions: 1) producing an introduction & outline, 2) if approved, completing an entire draft & editing cycle.
  4. From the successful trial project, we’ll proceed with a few additional assignments (paid at $200/article) in our normal production workflow.
  5. We’ll look to settle ‘best fit’ writers & contributors into 1-3 writing assignments per month.
