Three years we were sleeping on a full size mattress. And when I say “we” I mean myself, my partner, Annie, and our rescue pup, Milou. 

That’s a lot of bodies for such a small bed, especially if you consider that Milou seems to get the lionshare of the space (because “she’s a queen,” according to Annie).  

Not to mention, the springs in this old mattress had really taken a life of their own—each night laying down to bed we began feeling particularly attuned to the lumps and bumps that would bring a new sore spot the next morning. 

We needed a new bed! 

And of course, as is the impetus for all our Buy Ensemble write-ups and reviews, we wanted to ensure we weren’t just finding a quality product, but rather a product and a company that we felt comfortable supporting. 

A mattress is a large investment; that’s a lot of dollars you are voting with. Also, mattresses are an environmental nightmare, with the majority of the 50,000 mattresses that are disposed of daily, finding their way to our landfills. 

We wanted to sleep well, make a purchase that supported people and the planet, and not drain the bank. 

Too much to ask? Not for Leesa.

Considering a Leesa Mattress? Here’s What to Think About..

As a member of the #BuyEnsemble community, there are a few things I imagine are on your mind when searching for a new mattress, so I will briefly address some of those before jumping into our review of the Leesa Mattress…

1. What’s the Environmental and/or Social Impact of this Mattress Purchase?

As briefly mentioned a moment ago, mattresses can be environmental disasters! From the materials a mattress is produced with, to how far it needs to travel from factory to home, to what we do with it when it’s lifespan is over, we’ll want to consider the gambit. Of course, we want a mattress made with high-quality, environmentally friendly, and nontoxic materials. As well, a bed that will be built to last—the longer we use, the less we consume!

2. Is the Company Behind the Product One that I Can Feel Good About Supporting?

Yes! Leesa is a certified B Corporation, meaning they meet very high standards for their environmental and social impact. PLUS they donate thousands of mattresses every year to children in need. But more about all that a bit later. A mattress can be a big investment. Those dollars spent are supporting someone and consequently that person or company’s values—so it’s important to be sure a company is socially responsible.

3. Is It Going to Get Me a Good Night’s Sleep? 😴

How important is our sleep?!?

Of course, we have to get ourselves a new bed that will allow us to wake up feeling rested. Are you a side sleeper? Back sleeper? Or stomach sleeper? 

It’s important to be attuned to your sleep preferences to ensure you are matched with a mattress that’s just right.

4. How Much Will I Need to Spend? 💸

Mattress prices can vary widely. Traditionally, these bed-in-a-box companies have offered more affordable mattresses than traditional in-store options. Definite bonus ✅

For Annie and me, $1,000 – $1,500 was our new-bed-budget. 

Leesa mattress has options ranging from $400 all the way up to $2600.

5. Do You Need a Box Spring with a Leesa Mattress?

Like many foam mattresses, you don’t need a box spring to support your Leesa Mattress, in fact, they recommend that you don’t use one. Instead, Leesa recommends using a platform bed, an adjustable base, or a foundation with a metal frame.

6. What Do I Do with My Old Mattress? 😬

Did you know that over 80% of every mattress is recyclable, however, the majority of the estimated 50,000 mattresses thrown away daily in the United States end up in landfills? (Yes…you might be saying…you told me earlier 😐)

For the most part, there are two sensible and sustainable ways to dispose of your old mattress:

1. Recycle it— Recycling isn’t always easy, but it’s insanely important to divert as many mattresses from landfills that we can!

2. Donate it— If your mattress is still in good enough shape to donate, consider finding a local charity that will accept it.

Make sure ditching your old mattress at the landfill is your last resort!

Now, let’s take a deeper look into the Leesa.

A Full Leesa Mattress Review: A Mattress Made for Good!

When purchasing a Leesa Mattress, you have three options: their Original Mattress, their Hybrid Mattress, and their relatively new, Legend Mattress. 

Annie, Milou, and I opted for the Original, but the King Size! 👑

As Annie’s Dad thoughtfully commented, “Ahh, a king size mattress…the most comfortable way for a couple to grow apart.” Dark, but funny. Anyways… 

Head to Leesa.com, or find where Leesa’s are located locally to make your purchase. Select your size and determine if any accessories will be needed to complete your home sleep suite (pillows, mattress cover, bed frame, etc.).

Every Leesa Mattress is made to order. Leesa quotes 2-4 business days to build your mattress, compress it, box, and ship it! From there you should receive your luscious Leesa in 1-4 business days. 

With their White Glove Delivery service, they will also take away your old mattress to be recycled and help you to set up your new Leesa mattress. If you want this in-home delivery service, you are asked to allow an additional 7 business days for Leesa to coordinate with their moving partners. 

Home delivery or not, it is worthwhile to plan on having a friend, partner, or neighbor around for the delivery. These pups are heavy and awkward to drag inside. Especially with stairs! 

Leesa promises “rest assured” your new mattress will show up compressed and in a box (like the photo below) within 3-6 business days (unless you opt for the in-home delivery, of course).

Of course, as is typical with these foam beds, vacuum-packed into shipping boxes, you’ll need some time to decompress the mattress and let it air out. We waited until we were both home in the evening to open the box (we’d waited a long time for this moment!). 

After we got it out of the box, onto our bed frame (Leesa doesn’t recommend using a box spring), and out of the plastic, we could hardly wait for it to decompress so we could try it out. The instructions say to give the mattress a full 24 hours to fully decompress from its boxed journey. 

Tired and excited to have our first night of comfortable sleep in a long time, we broke the rules. We gave our mattress 6-8 hours to take full form, and then we slept on it…and it was glorious. We highly recommend, however, planning ahead, so you can give your new Leesa the full 24 hours to decompress as the mattress professionals instruct. 

When initially unpacked, you should expect a weird, plastic-y smell lingering on your mattress. Leesa users report the smell clearing up anywhere from 1-4 weeks after unpacking. For me, the smell was gone after a week, but for my sensitive-nosed partner, she says it took about 3 weeks.

Quick Note — What’s the Difference? The Leesa Original, Hybrid, and Legend

Leesa has three variations of mattresses for you to select from—depending on your body type and preferred sleep position, you might want to pay a keen eye.  

The Original 

The Leesa Original is their “most popular multilayer foam mattress.” 

No matter whether you are getting the Twin, Queen size, or the Cal King, the Leesa Original is a 10 inch 3-layer all-foam mattress that is rated at a medium-firm.

The Original, as the most affordable and accessible of Leesa’s mattresses, is positioned to offer the most universal comfort and support for sleepers of all kinds—back, side, or stomach.  

The Hybrid 

The Leesa Hybrid Mattress (formally known as the Sapira model) is an 11 inch foam and pocket spring mattress, rated as the firmest of all that Leesa has to offer. 

For folks who opt for a bit more support (typically stomach sleepers) and like a firm mattress, the Hybrid offers enhanced pressure-relief and support. As well, if you fancy yourself an innerspring mattress person, the Hybrid might be where you take your serious looks if you aren’t ready to go all-foam. 

The Legend 

The Leesa Legend (perhaps given the name for a reason), is the newest addition to Leesa’s mattress line. 

This is rated the softest of all three, made to 12 inches with foam and a dual hybrid pocket spring system (totalling with a 6-layer construction)—this is supposedly the best option for side and back sleepers. 

Made with organic cottons, merino wool, and recycled materials, the Leesa Legend is hypoallergenic and perhaps the “greenest” of the lineup.

Deep Dive—The Leesa Original Mattress

Annie and I are each extremely satisfied with our Leesa Original Mattress. Annie’s a side sleeper, I’m both back and side, and we each love the comfort and level of firmness this model Leesa mattress provides. 

With our old mattress, Annie continuously woke up with back pain, and I had countless restless nights of sleep, attempting to avoid a spring in the rib. 

Of course, anything may have been an improvement from where we came, but this Leesa has genuinely contributed to more consistently restful nights of sleep. And, what could be more important? 

For a broader look at the company of Leesa itself, to the techs and specs of their mattresses, let’s give you a deeper view into what you could be getting with this mattress.

Multilayer, All-Foam Mattress ☁️

There’s four layers that make up the Leesa Original Mattress, with the top layer being the cleanly designed (and oddly comfortable), Leesa four-striped polyester-lycra blend fabric cover. 

After that, it’s a three layer foam construction. Let’s walk through each. 

Comfort Layer (2’’) 

First comes the top Comfort Layer, built with a highly responsive foam intended to help you sleep “cool.” 

This foam top layer also helps to give the mattress some “bounce and hug,” mitigating any potential sinkage that happens typically with all foam mattresses. 

Memory Foam Recovery Layer (2’’) 

The second layer (following the Comfort Layer) is the memory foam layer. The memory foam layer will provide “pressure-relief” as the mattress begins contouring your body—the layer of memory foam keeps painful pressure points from forming and will keep minimal pressure on the back, hip, and shoulders. 

Support Layer (6’’) 

And lastly, we have the Support Layer, which provides the core support foam layer for the whole mattress. This high-density polyfoam layer is what Leesa claims provides its “universal comfort” for sleepers of different shapes,sizes, and preferred sleeping positions! 

Of course, as you begin to look at different models (like the Hybrid or the Legend), your layer options change in type and quantity. 

But, with all three layers (and that stylish cover) working together, the Leesa Original mattress makes for a comfortable night’s sleep. Not to mention, with an all-foam mattress like this one, the motion transfer is minimal. 

Annie and I get up at slightly different times, Milou jumps on and off the bed throughout the night, and all bed inhabitants are left undisturbed and unknowing of each other’s activities throughout the night/morning. 

In recent years, Leesa has upgraded and replaced their previous Avena foam, to a newer proprietary blend, LSA200 foam. This new foam was constructed and implemented to improve the durability of the mattress and offer more pressure relief. 

A memory foam mattress like the Leesa, of course, has strengths and weaknesses. A strength, for example, is that there’s almost complete motion isolation—motion transfer from you will cause very little (if any) disturbance for your partner, and vice versa. 

However, on the weakness side, all-foam mattresses offer very little edge support (as compared to innerspring mattresses). If you are worried about putting pressure on the sides of the mattress and falling off, it’s something to be considered! 

And of course, get your Leesa mattress in the size that works for you, Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King, they have them all!

CertiPUR-US ®-Certified  ✅

The CertiPUR-US certification signifies that Leesa has constructed their foam mattresses without any chemicals or ingredients that would be harmful to you or your loved ones. 

This means specifically, their mattresses are made: 

• without ozone depleters
• without PBDE flame retardants
• without mercury, lead, and other heavy metals
• without formaldehyde
• without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
• with Low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions for indoor air quality (< 0.5 parts per million)

Made in the USA

Perhaps a small detail, but Leesa’s mattresses aren’t just designed in the USA (as many companies may claim), they are also made in the USA. This means that you can trust that their manufacturing is up to U.S. work standards. 

This is also important because that tells us our mattresses aren’t having to travel as far to get to our homes. 

Without making exact claims, this would mean reduced carbon emissions and “greener” transport (like freight or truck versus airplane).

As well, from the get-go shipping is free, and you have the option to get in-home white glove delivery.

If you decide Leesa isn’t going to work for you after 100 calendar days of sleep, Leesa will coordinate a pickup of the mattress from your home. 

Don’t worry—that returned mattress will still be put to good use. In most cases, your returned mattress will join the thousands of mattresses Leesa has already donated to children in need of a soft place to rest their head.
